Antequera, 25 minutes drive, is a historic and bustling market town (Tuesday). It is a pretty town with some fine examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture; and probably the finest church in Andalucia – The Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The Alcazaba, a Moorish castle (1000AD) overlooks the town and is approached through the ‘Arco de los Gigantes’. This sixteenth century archway was built using stones from the remains of the original Roman town.

Antequera is also famous for the prehistoric dolmen caves on the northern outskirts of the town. These are graves that were built by inhabitants around 2000BC from stones, up to 7 metres long, which were transported from nearby hills and covered with mounds of earth.
Other local places of interest include El Chorro Gorge, with its incredible turquoise lakes and Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, famous for flocks of greater flamingo.
